At home Sunday morning our Junior 6 team came out on top against a well drilled St. Margaret’s side.
Despite the visitors recording a blitz of points in the opening minutes, St. Brigid’s were the more dominant team in the first 20, especially in the central areas of the pitch seeing effective and accurate kickouts won by veterans Stevie Mullen and Ciaran Slane.
After 20 minutes The North County men saw a straight red and the visitors were reduced to 14 men - with the new FRC rules, Margaret’s were stretched immediately, limited in their numbers pushing forward. The home side took advantage on their counter attacks with only 14 men 3 back rule imposed on their opponents clearly having an impact.
Despite Brigid’s dominance the visitors made the wind work to their advantage and went into half time with a 2 point lead.
The second half saw St. Brigid’s continue to dominate possession despite St. Margaret’s having their own crucial moments. The visiting side dropped extra men back to fight against the extra man and the wind.
They could only hold out for so long, with the home side’s constant attacks piercing the Margaret’s defence. Brigid’s took the lead entering the final quarter, and finishing a well taken goal with 10 mins left on the clock.
Brigid’s drove on from here with a coordinated attack, winning the ball in midfield with aggressive interlinking play advancing forward. The result was a well taken goal rattling both the roof of the net and the Margaret’s defence.
The final play summed up the visitor’s day with a 30m free dropping short in the final play of the game which was all but over. St. Brigid’s came out on top with 7 to spare in a physical and nip-tuck game.
St. Brigid’s 2-10
St Margaret’s 0-9
It was not to be for our AFL 8 & 9 teams who travelled to Ballinteer & Raheny with our 8’s playing at 11am and 9’s at 3pm.
AFL 8
Our AFL 8 teams were southside in Marley Park who battled a strong Ballinteer St. John’s side, clawing back a 7 point deficit to 4 points - time was not on the visitors side as Ballinteer SJ managed to keep out Brigid’s relentless advances out in the latter stage of the game.
Ballinteer St. John’s 1-11
St. Brigid’s 1-7
AFL 9
Our Junior 9’s were in St. Anne’s Park vs Raheny in the afternoon fixture. A barrage of goals ultimately faded any chance of a Brigid’s revival despite positive passages of play from the visiting side.
St. Brigids defended and attacked valiantly but it was just one of those days - Raheny victorious on home turf.
